GREY MATCH - FINDING THE GREYHOUND THAT IS RIGHT FOR YOU
_ GPA’s Grey Match approach is different from many other dog adoption groups and services, and we believe our success speaks for itself. Our matching process has placed over 1400 greyhounds into forever homes with loving families. At GPA we believe you deserve to find not just any greyhound, but the right greyhound, which we are able to do by taking time to get to know you and the dog that will eventually become your best friend.
Unlike the traditional process used by many rescue groups, of meeting a dog on-site and taking them home immediately, the GPA Grey Match approach pairs adopters with hounds based on Compatibility Factors that are the first steps towards long-term, forever home success.
Adopting a dog is a lifetime commitment. While there are many greyhounds that need homes, our goal is not just finding homes for them, but finding forever homes. Being able to commit to forever with a greyhound is made possible by finding that special dog with whom you share true compatibility, and it's compatibility that forms the basis of every match we make.
Wanting to adopt a particular dog based on “love at first sight” or after reading an online description of a dog’s personality may seem charming, but it doesn’t address many of the key indicators for adoption success. At GPA MN, we deliver more than just a dog. We are committed to matching you with a greyhound only after we take the time to get to know you and our greyhounds in order to provide you with the best adoption experience possible.
Junior, Mabel, & Hambone: Three Times Charmed
We spent a long time trying to decide whether or not to get a dog, but after talking with GPA reps about what characteristics we wanted (and didn't want), we were reassured that a greyhound would be perfect for our family. Junior has been everything we hoped for and more!
When we applied to adopt a second hound, we trusted GPA's opinion that Mabel would be a great addition, and she has exceeded our high expectations.
Finally, when Junior's littermate Hambone needed a home, we were persuaded to take him in by the description of his good nature from the GPA volunteers who had fostered him.
We still can't believe how lucky we are to have three of the best hounds ever, and feel immense gratitude to GPA for finding them for us!
Krista & Joe: A Match Made in Minneapolis
In my line of work, I have the opportunity to meet a lot of people, especially ‘young in career’ folks looking for a job, or those taking the next step in their career. When I talk about career management, I often tell people “It’s all about fit.” Funnily enough, the same can be said of our interpersonal relationships, be they of the human or furry variety. I’m happy to say, that the fit between me and my bestest houndie buddy couldn't be better.
I am relatively new to Minneapolis, and while I’ve wanted a dog in my life for many years, moving far from friends and family exacerbated that desire for companionship. As such, I started the search for a dog friend last winter. While my family always had relatively high-energy dogs and I loved them to bits, with my career and lifestyle, I knew I couldn’t give a lab the high-energy home it needs. A good friend of mine at work had suggested Greyhounds as a breed to me. At that point, I responded with the commonly held mis-conception “I couldn't possibly…they require WAY too much exercise”…to which she knowingly nodded and smiled and sent me away with some websites to check out. After much reading and research, I thought I had a pretty good understanding of the breed, and off I went to a GPA-MN event to meet some hounds. I was immediately smitten…those big brown eyes looking at me, and their utter calmness in an otherwise chaotic environment…I knew this was the breed for me. I filled out my application that day.
When I filled out my application in March, there was a bit of a hound drought. But, my adoption rep assured me the wait would be worth it. After spending a great deal of time to get to know me, my lifestyle, what I could offer a dog and what the dog could offer me, I felt confident he’d find me a good match. And did he! Joe came to me on May 30th, and it was really love at first sight. Described by his foster-mom as laid back, shy and somewhat aloof, he gave me a coveted greyhound kiss when I met him…and followed me around my condo all evening as Curt took me through the ropes of welcoming a greyhound into my home. Over the following months, he has progressive come out of his shell…and now bounds down the hall for his walks, loves chewing bones and playing with stuffies, wags his tail at the occasional dog in excitement, and is even learning the art of snuggling!
There have been some bumps along the way, to be sure. But, Joe has settled amazingly well into retired life, and is now a favorite in my building…the concierge staff love giving him cookies J He is truly my best pal, and I now can’t imagine life without him.
I will forever be grateful to GPAMN for the time and effort they put into this process. These dogs are special creatures. By taking the time to get to know each dog’s personality and each adopting family, they ensure that these wonderful dogs are given the best possible chance at a happy forever life.
Every day when I come home from work, as Joe bounds down the hall to greet me, I’m reminded that I made a wonderful decision to open my home to such a loving creature, and that this match was truly all about fit…. I hug him, tell him about my day, and sometimes get an enthusiastic “Roo! Roo!”.
